Tuition will be paid for in college
(MILAN, Ind.) – Recent Milan High School graduate Shelley Hoffrogge has taken the oath to serve our country.
Hoffrogge has enlisted in the Indiana National Guard and will serve as a military police officer.
"It has always been an idea of mine to join but I didn't realize I could be in the Army at the same time as being in college," she said.
She found out that is was possible and took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) where she received a perfect score. It allowed her to choose from various different jobs within the National Guard.
"I've always have had an interest in being in law enforcement and I will be able to do that and still be a to pursue my passion of being a veterinarian at the same," she explained.
We met Hoffrogge through The 812’s Student Journalism program, where we provide opportunities to area high school and college students who have an interest in journalism or communications.
The 18-year-old wrote numerous stories her senior year and her work was featured in our first-ever 812 Magazine in January.
The decision to join the National Guard is not something she took lightly. Shelley spent months considering and researching the decision.
"I know I am entering adulthood and knew this decision would alter my life. Other than my parents, I really didn't tell anyone that I was considering this until I posted it on Facebook Friday. I wanted this to be entirely my decision," Hoffrogge told The 812.
She will serve one weekend per month and two weeks in the summer with the National Guard, in exchange she will have 100% of her college tuition paid for.
Hoffrogge will attend a National Guard training station this fall and plans to further her education at Purdue University where she will major in Animal Science and minor in Animal Agribusiness.
Hoffrogge is also a candidate for Miss Ripley County which that winner will be announced at the Damm Theater tonight.
