More than 30 departments honored the Holton firefighter
(HOLTON, Ind.) – Firefighters from across Southeast Indiana honored one of their own on Sunday afternoon.
The funeral for 19-year-old Landen Comer took place at Hopewell Baptist Church in Holton.
The 2023 Jac-Cen-Del grad passed away after a crash on U.S. 421 on Tuesday which also claimed the life of 24-year-old Nathan Vogelsang, of Dillsboro.
Comer was a devoted member of the Holton Fire Department and his fellow firefighters carried him to his final resting place today.
More than 30 fire departments from across the area were at the funeral to pay their respects.
One of the firefighters who attended the funeral was recent Jennings County grad Alexis Carson who serves on Letts and Westport in Decatur County.
“There is Aurora here, all the way up to New Point and Millhousen, there is just a lot of departments here showing support for a fellow responder. It is amazing to see the love amongst us that is here, some of us don’t even know each other that well, but we're still here as one," Carson said.
There were departments that came from as far away as Bartholomew County as nearly every county in our area was represented.
Metamora firefighter Elijah Bryant was another firefighter who made the trip to Holton. He was specifically touched by Comer’s dedication to the fire service at such a young age.
“It’s hard to find young guys to serve as a firefighter and be as dedicated as he was,” Bryant said. “I heard he was already certified and was enrolled in additional classes. It is truly sad but I am honored to be here,” Bryant told The 812.
The funeral procession also included bagpipes and a last call. We plan to provide that video footage but want to give that to Landen's family first before making it public.
