Helped Tigers win state title
(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – Lawrenceburg goalkeeper Hillary Knippenberg is the Decatur County Memorial Hospital Athlete of the Week!
The Tigers competed in the Class 2A girls’ soccer state championship against Mishawaka Marian on Saturday.
The game was tied at 0-0 after regulation and an overtime period and the game would be decided by penalty kicks.
Knippenberg would only let one goal in during penalty kicks as the Tigers would win the championship 4-1.
During one shot, she was admittedly out of position but rose to the occasion.
“We wanted her to go to her right, the kicker’s left, and when it went down the middle, I just kind of dropped my head, but then she made that save which was absolutely fabulous,” Tigers head coach Bill Offutt told the IHSAA.
Knippenberg made a leg save to preserve the Tigers 3-1 lead before senior Preslee Rugg scored the final goal to ensure a Lawrenceburg victory.
“Honestly, it was super unintentional. I was just diving, and I got lucky enough to hit it with my leg,” Knippenberg said. “It’s honestly very nerve-racking, and I just choose a side, and hopefully, that’s the side they go, and I save it.”
The efforts of Knippenberg and the Tiger squad led the school to its first-ever girls’ soccer state title.
