Athlete, young Decatur Co. firefighter awarded by NBA

High schooler is also a volunteer firefighter

(INDIANAPOLIS) -- The NBA All-Star Game will be held in Indianapolis next month.

As part of the celebration, the host committee awarded 24 Indiana high schoolers who were nominated because of their work beyond the court or playing field.

Alexis Carson is a senior at Jennings County High School who has found success on the girl's basketball and softball teams.

She also spends her free time in a way that few high schoolers do.

Carson is a volunteer firefighter for the Westport and Letts volunteer fire departments in Decatur County.

She's already received her firefighter certifications and on track to earn her EMT certification in May.

“Alexis is an inspiration to other students,” her nominator said. "She is driven to succeed in education and athletics, and is dedicated to, not only in her school community, but in her neighborhood community as well.”

She also volunteers at her church and at various youth basketball camps.

The senior received a $2,400 scholarship from the commitee toward any college she plans to attend.
