Batesville cop helps stranded motorist

Incident happened on Wednesday evening

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A traffic stop was being conducted in Batesville during the intense fog and rain on Wednesday night.

However, it wasn’t the type of traffic stop that typically makes the news.

A vehicle was parked alongside the road in front of the McDonald’s on State Road 229.

Sergeant Chris Smith noticed the vehicle, stopped and activated his emergency lights.

It turned out the driver became stranded because they ran out of gas.

Smith, who carries a spare gasoline canister in his cruiser, assisted the driver and helped them safely get back on the road.

“I wasn’t surprised to hear this at all as Chris is always the type of officer to go out of his way when somebody needs a hand,” said Batesville Police Chief Stan Holt.

Smith has been on the Batesville Police Department for 17 years.
