Rolling start to the school year
(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – Whether you’re a kindergartner or a high school freshman, the first day at a new school can cause a lot of anxiety.
It’s something Batesville Schools has recognized and are mitigating through an innovative back-to-school process.
“I’ve heard from a lot of people who scared to death to come to high school as a freshman. I want to reduce factors such as anxiety and stress as much as possible,” said Batesville Superintendent Paul Ketcham.
Ketcham has implemented a rolling start for when kids return to the classroom this school year.
Tuesday will be the first day of class for students who have attended their school the year prior, for example upperclassmen.
On Wednesday, the only students who will be at school will be those who are new to the school.
“And by Thursday, we’ll be ready to roll. We believe this approach maximizes education time while also having benefits for our cafeteria and transportation associates as well,” Ketcham said.
The high school is also instituting a new Freshman Community program this year.
Each of the approximately 170 freshmen will have access to their own counselor and administrators to ensure the transition to high school is as smooth as possible.
