(MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind.) -- Family and friends are grieving the unexpected loss of a Batesville woman who was killed in a crash in northern Indiana Sunday night.
21-year-old Riley Duerstock sustained fatal injuries after police say a truck collided with the car that she was a passenger in near Plymouth, Indiana.
Friends say she and her boyfriend, Jarrod Nichols, were traveling through Marshall County on their way back from a vacation in Michigan.
Nichols is an Aurora police officer who was off-duty at the time of the crash.
Duerstock was a 2021 graduate of Batesville High School.
Her friends are remembering her for her kind-hearted personality.
"I was oftentimes jealous of her because of how humble, compassionate and selfless she was; always seeing the good in everything and in everyone. She saved my life more times than I can count, and I will forever cherish the fact that above all, she chose me to be her best friend," said Isabel Rennekamp.
Jarrod Nichols is a 2017 Milan High School graduate and has served in the Indiana National Guard for six years.
His current condition is not known at this time.
Authorities say their vehicle was struck by a truck driven by Arturo Mendez of White Pigeon, Michigan. He was also transported to the hospital for injuries.
Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
