"Not just a job for teenagers"
(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – Although summer is in full swing, there is an urgency to lifeguards for area pools this fall.
Kristen Fletcher is the Aquatics Director at the Southeast Indiana YMCA in Batesville, which has a pool that is open year-round.
She says lifeguard shortages is a national issue but is now becoming a Batesville problem.
Being a lifeguard is typically seen as a job for teenagers, however, Fletcher says the YMCA offers a flexible schedule for anyone who wants to utilize their personal swimming skills to protect others.
With the school year beginning soon, the Southeast Indiana YMCA is hoping to find new lifeguards that can work between 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
Whether that is the entire shift or in increments. They also have openings for other hours of the day.
“Our pool is in high demand and it would be really devastating if we had to adjust pool hours because we don’t have the lifeguards to keep it open,” Fletcher said. “There are people who tell me that until I use the pool, I can’t get up and move around, so this is important for a lot of people to keep this open as much as possible.”
Fletcher added that a part-time lifeguard job would be perfect for a stay-at-home mom or recent retiree.
“If they have kids that are in school this could be a few hours that changes up the daily routine, or if they have little ones we could put her kids in our daycare while she works,” Fletcher said.
Have you ever taken a lifeguard course? It’s an opportunity to learn a skill that could save a life.
“You don’t have to be on the swim team or a great swimmer, if you are comfortable in the water, we can teach you and help you learn the skills to pursue the certification,” she added.
If you are a teenager and interested in a part-time job this fall, the YMCA offers flexible scheduling around sports and a $1,000 scholarship opportunity as long as you work five hours a week.
