Busy day on the farm
(ENOCHSBURG, Ind.) – It was another busy start to the Christmas season for Bohman Tree Farm on Friday.
The farm opened this morning and there were nearly 600 cars in the parking lot by 9 a.m.
There have been customers that came from as far away as Wisconsin, Kentucky and Illinois already this year.
Bohman’s has been welcoming families to their Enochsburg farm for nearly a half-century.
The farm was started in 1968 when Mike Bohman planted the first Christmas trees. Mike would later expand the operation by planting more trees in the pasture that used to be grazed by dairy cattle.
His son, Doug, says business has been steady over the years but things exploded after COVID. One of the reasons is due to the closure of some other tree farms in Southeast Indiana.
“It used to take us three weeks to do what we do on opening day alone now,” he said.
Doug says meeting demands is only possible because of the part-time workers as well as neighbors in Enochsburg who allow customers to park on their properties.
“It is truly a community event all around, for example, a lot of the kids who work here are North Decatur football players, and coaches, and we get compliments all the time on our kids who help here,” Doug said.
Owen Eldridge is a North Decatur senior and is one of those part-time workers. It’s a family tradition that he is honored to be part of.
“You can tell just about anybody that you’re part of the Bohman family and the tree farm and they know what you’re talking about,” Eldridge said.
“Just the people you get to meet here, along with the social skills you gain from this is something you don’t get at a lot of other places," he added.
Eldridge along with his friends worked nonstop shaking and baling trees on Friday.
Are you planning to visit a local tree farm? Be sure to stop by soon as area farms could likely sell out in the very near future.
