(MADISON, Ind.) – Those who enjoy birdwatching have the opportunity to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) at the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge.
Volunteer birdwatchers of all ages and skills are encouraged to sign up for the event which will be held on Saturday, December 21. You can sign up for a full-day or half-day.
If you are interested in participating in the Big Oaks NWR count, preregister with the refuge at (812) 273-0783.
The CBC began back on Christmas Day of 1900 when a small group of people sought out an alternative for hunting.
Rather than shoot birds, the group counted, identified and recorded all the birds they saw. It is now a national effort and data collected is used for scientific purposes.
Big Oaks NWR consists of 50,000 acres on the former Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG) located in Jennings, Ripley, and Jefferson Counties in southeastern Indiana.
More information about the refuge is available at the website https://www.fws.gov/refuge/big-oaks.
