Board vows to make right after Rising Sun mural removed

Community mural installed in 2021

(RISING SUN, Ind.) -- It appears there will be a longterm positive outcome after a community mural was removed at the Rising Sun Tourism Office.

The Heart In Hand mural was created by Rising Sun art teacher Amberly King while students and community members painted the surrounding blocks. It was completed in 2021.

The mural was painted over this past week which led to an uproar from some community members.

One resident wrote, "Why would anyone paint over the mural that we, especially our kids, were so proud of? This was something that was supposed to be there in 20+ years that our kids could show to their kids."

The mural was replaced with white paint that shows posters of upcoming events in town.

A Rising Sun Tourism board member reached out to King on Saturday and informed her that the organization intends to bring back the community mural.

"It may not be the same but it will be great and I have no doubt that a positive will come from this," King said.

The 812 also confirmed with the board member that they are committed to finding a longterm solution.

More information on the future protect is expected in the coming weeks.
