(JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind.) – The sentencing hearing for former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel was held on Monday.

It’s a case that has been overseen by Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel, who has served as special prosecutor.

Noel pleaded guilty to 27 felonies in August that are related to misusing millions of public dollars to fund a lavish lifestyle.

The August plea deal came with a 15-year prison sentence, however, the judge would not accept the terms without hearing from victims first.

On Monday, Noel gave a tearful apology as more several people gave victim statements.

The judge sentenced Noel to 12 years in prison and three years of probation. Noel is also ordered to pay back $3 million in restitution.

Ric Hertel gave a media briefing after the sentencing and said, "You all can turn the page, this chapter is closed. I know it won't be overnight or in the next year, but in time. In my eyes the grip that Jamey Noel had on this community is over. Nobody has to go through him to get elected for anything, to get medical care for anything, or to report a crime."
