Community Champion: Savannah Danforth

Greensburg High Schooler creates unique drive

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A high school student’s leadership is helping to bring in over 500 boxes of cereal for local food pantries.

Junior Savannah Danforth of Greensburg High School noticed a need for those around her.

With the school year nearing an end, she recognized that some students are dependent on school meals.

Danforth said she brainstormed ways to collect non-perishables for local food pantries, to ensure that there were food items available to those in need during the summer.

With Danforth’s direction, Greensburg’s National Honor Society launched the cereal box

collection in April.

Since then, over 300 cereal boxes have been collected at the high school, surpassing her goal of 250. Additionally, over 220 boxes have been collected from pre-k to fifth grade classrooms.

All cereal boxes gathered at the end of the campaign will be dispersed to Hands of Hope food pantry and The Bread of Life.

Along with the National Honor Society, Danforth participates in Junior Optimist Club, FCA, and

the New Directions Teen Council.

Danforth said she finds importance in serving her community and the people around her.

“We live here. We are really dependent on the things that we have here,” she said. “I feel like

some of us can very easily take it for granted and not realize that there are other people.”

Aside from her extracurriculars at school, she also volunteers her time teaching children at

Community Church of Greensburg.

When reflecting on ways to pour into the community, Danforth said she encourages community members to reach out to others for inspiration or ideas.

“Don’t be afraid and find someone that you can talk to about it,” Danforth said. “Even if you

just want to do something and you don’t have ideas, just reach out to someone and they might have something that’s weighing on their heart.”

Her initiative also caught the attention of another school. Jac-Cen-Del decided to get involved in the challenge and donated 250 cereal boxes they collected to Greensburg. It was a way for the school to show appreciation, after Greensburg students honored Carson Hughes during an event in April.
