DCMH Athlete of the Week: Madi Allen

Signed with Taylor University on Wednesday

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) — North Decatur senior Madi Allen has earned the DCMH Athlete of the Week honors!

Allen will continue her basketball career in college as she signed with Taylor University on Wednesday.

“I went up there on a campus visit and it was immediately one of those things where I knew it was home,” Allen told The 812.

She says the visit to the campus chapel, along with meeting the basketball coaches and her future teammates were reasons why Taylor was an easy decision.

Allen started playing basketball around third grade and it quickly developed into a passion.

“I’ve loved it since I started, from playing AAU to working out with my dad all the time, I learned to love it early and that led to success,” she said.

That success has transitioned onto the varsity court as Allen recently scored her 1,000th point for the Chargers.

One unique part of Allen’s game is that she does her weightlifting with the North Decatur football players.

“That has prepared me physically by lifting with them, and so has Coach Laker, who knows a lot about bigger schools and colleges, so we do a lot of extra drills and practices he has,” she said.

Her signing ceremony included family, friends, teachers, basketball teammates and coaches,  as well as football coaches because Allen is a student-manager for the football team.

“Half of the people here I didn’t even reach out to personally, yet they showed up. I know I have a huge support group. It just shows how people are there for me and that is a big part of why I think I've found success,” Allen said.

Another person that attended the signing was Taylor’s head basketball coach Cassie Wiseman.

When interviewing student-athletes, we typically ask “What do you want players from other schools to know about you” and Madi gave us one of the most unique answers we’ve received.

Instead of talking about herself, Madi thanked the opposing schools. She credited the competition for making her a better athlete on-and-off the court.

“I want to thank them honestly, for giving me good competition around this area, making me learn how to watch film, and getting me into the gym more,” she said.

One opposing player she wanted to give a shout out to in particular was South Decatur senior Makayla Somers.

“She is just a great player, a great athlete and someone I am happy to have competed against,” she added.

Allen and the Chargers are 3-1 on the season after beating Switzerland County 63-18 on Thanksgiving Eve.

Madi plans to pursue secondary education at Taylor.
