DCMH offers tips to stay safe during snow, bitter cold

Updated: 2 days ago

Major storm event possible on Sunday

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A winter storm and bitter cold temperatures are on the way for Southeast Indiana.

Decatur County Memorial Hospital is offering some tips to keep you safe over the next few weeks:

Generators

Generators can be helpful if your power goes out, however, if used improperly, they pose a significant risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, among other concerns. Generators should be used outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and garages. Install a carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and deadly.

Driving

In extreme winter weather, stay off the roads. However, if not possible, avoid using cruise control. If you feel your car sliding, steer in the direction of a skid. Reduce your speed and accelerate and decelerate slowly. Consider keeping a kit in your vehicle including water, snacks, first-aid kit, portable phone charger, flashlight, blanket, and extra batteries.

Preventing Falls

Falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in adults 45 and older. With the potential for snow and ice on the ground, choose footwear with good traction, walk with a "penguin shuffle taking short, flatfooted steps, and keep your hands available. Avoid carrying heavy items or walking with your hands in your pocket.

Frostbite

Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color on fingers, toes, and the face. Warning signs include numbness, white or grayish skin, or firm//waxy skin. Limit your outdoor exposure as much as possible during frigid temperatures.

Hypothermia

Hypothermia is also a concern, as it is an unusually low body temperature. A body temperature below 95 degrees is an emergency. Warning signs include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, and slurred speech.

Shoveling Snow

According to the American Heart Association, individuals may face an increased risk of a heart attack or cardiac arrest following shoveling heavy snow--even in individuals considered otherwise healthy. Take breaks and try to just push show, not lift and throw it.

Space Heaters

Space heaters can pose significant fire and electric concerns, if not properly used. Make sure if using a space heater, it does not show any signs of wear on the cord or plug. Additionally, ensure it is kept 3 feet away from anything that can burn--paper, clothing, etc.
