Car slams into Greensburg gas station Monday morning

Police: Driver suffered medical emergency

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – It was a scary start to the work week for a gas station in Greensburg.

Shortly before 7 a.m., a car slammed into the entrance of Tree City Travel Plaza on Michigan Avenue.

Greensburg police say the car was driven by 26-year-old Michael Ely, of Seymour.

Investigators say he suffered a medical episode that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

The car would travel through a field, before being launched by an elevated point and later landing through the front glass doors of the building.

Ely was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Police added one gas station worker had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The 812 stopped by the gas station Monday morning as construction to repair the entrance is already underway.

Tree City Travel Plaza owner Jeff Whitaker confirmed that nobody inside the store was hurt during the incident.

Crews began repairs Monday

Whitaker hopes to open for business again on Tuesday morning, however, isn’t sure if that will happen due to the cash registers that were damaged.

The Greensburg Police Department was assisted by Decatur County Emergency Communications, Greensburg Fire Department and Tim’s Wrecker Service.
