EC grad is member of IU band with law school ambitions

"Our main goal is to bring as much energy and excitement"

(BLOOMINGTON, Ind.) – A 2023 East Central graduate is a member of the Indiana University marching band.

Maya Ziegler performs the trombone at football games, soccer games and men’s basketball games.

Ziegler says there are some major differences between being a member of a high school and college band.

High school is much more geared toward competitions where members learn one single show for a competition, she said.

“College band is fully about the team you’re supporting and we learn a different show for every game and we play a lot of popular songs to get the crowd and the teams into it,” Ziegler told The 812.

She also noted that they practice four to five days a week and the main goal is to always bring as much energy and excitement to the games as possible.

What’s her advice to high schoolers interested in college band?

She says it is well worth the time to pursue college band. Ziegler says the atmosphere is much different, especially at a major school like Indiana.

“It also gives you a huge opportunity to meet new people and make friends as soon as you get into college,” she said.

There are more than 300 members in IU’s Marching Hundred band.

Ziegler also added that it doesn’t matter what your major is either as only about 30 percent of band members are majoring in music.

Maya is certainly one of those that are not majoring in music. She is majoring in Criminal Justice with the goal of going to Law School.

Her career goal is to work in Medical Malpractice Law.
