Graduated from new Ivy Tech Healthcare program
(ST. LEON, Ind.) – Most local teenagers use the summertime to get a break from school, relax and have fun.
That wasn’t the case for East Central senior Kennerie Cook this summer.
During the spring, East Central informed students about a brand new program through Ivy Tech called Summer Healthcare Academy.
The free academy is intended for high schoolers who have an interest in medical careers. The students can earn Ivy Tech credit, obtain industry-recognized skills, and learn success strategies on a college campus.
Cook was accepted into the program but attending the 8-week academy was no easy chore.
She had to drive two hours, three times a week to attend the course in Madison. Cook not only attended the course, but never missed a class.
Her perfect attendance resulted in her receiving a $500 gift card.
“It wasn’t just about the money, this was an amazing experience and Ivy Tech gave us so much free stuff,” she said.
In addition to college credits, she also earned CPR and Stop The Bleed certifications.
Cook says this course has single-handedly helped her realize that her future is in healthcare.
“There was so much hands-on learning opportunities and the teachers even said they would help connect me with professionals in the field. As a high school student, we typically don’t have those connections so this was amazing,” she said.
Kennerie graduated from the program this week and is encouraging other students to give this program a shot next summer.
“I think as a teenager we think our summer is so important, but for me, thinking of my career is more important right now,” she added.
She says her summer wasn’t ruined by any means. She’s had plenty of time to hang out with friends, and go on a few different vacations.
