Families Tradition: Lifelong friends pass love of hunting to kids

Updated: Apr 24, 2024

Eight kids get turkey during special hunt

(ST. PETERS, Ind.) – Six local friends have been hunting together for as long as they can remember.

Travis Offill, Tyler Tschaenn, Eric and Donnie Barrett, Drew Foster and Charlie Tschaenn have been sitting in the woods chasing deer and turkey for close to 30 years.

Several of them have become father’s and are now passing their love of hunting down to the next generation.

For the past three years, they have brought all of their children together for a turkey hunt in the St. Peter’s area each spring.

“We make sure if one kid can’t find a turkey and others have tagged out, we make sure they get one,” Travis Offill said.

It all came together when eight of their children got a turkey on Saturday.

“This means everything to Tyer, Eric, Donnie, Drew, Chunky and me. To pass this on to our kids. We’ve even said that if we don’t hunt ourselves anymore it’s fine, let’s give it all to the kids,” Offill added.

The friends also get together to host the Big Buck awards ceremony every year, where they recognize their kids for the deer they harvested in the fall.
