Family: Toddler fighting for life after eating suboxone pill

Family says it happened at Dillsboro thrift store

(MANCHESTER, Ind.) -- A Dearborn County family is asking for prayers as their toddler is fighting for her life today.

18-month-old Azana Trentman is the daughter of Army veterans Shayna Wood and Austen Trentman, who live in Manchester.

They say they visited a thrift store in Dillsboro on Wednesday and say Azana found a backpack and ate something that was inside it.

Her dad cleared her throat and induced vomiting since he didn’t know what it was.

He also tasted the substance and said it was sweet with a melted candy consistency.

Azana acted normal on the car ride from Dillsboro, but everything changed shortly after they got home.

She was rushed to St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital before being transferred to Cincinnati Children’s.

On Friday, the family received toxicology reports that indicate the substance was a fruit-flavored suboxone pill.

Azana is now fighting for her life and her family is praying for a miracle.

Her grandmother, Deirdre, says Azana is the happiest, most joyful little girl.

“She loves Cinderella, kitty cats and horses. She and her daddy danced everyday to the oldie song, California Dreaming. We have so many videos of her dancing to that song,” Deirdre told The 812.

While the family is asking for prayers, they are also hoping this gets the attention of thrift stores.

“We are heartbroken that Azana is suffering due to someone’s negligence in leaving such a dangerous item in a donated backpack. We are also troubled by the thrift store's apparent failure to thoroughly inspect donated items before they are placed for sale,” they said.

The family is asking for privacy today and say they will share more information when they are ready.
