Greeted by students, friends and family
(BATESVILLE, Ind.) -- Batesville resident Thomas Essick was met by supporters as he pedaled into town Thursday morning.
He is participating in the Race Across America which began in California and will end in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Thomas Essick is a Batesville assistant cross country coach, middle school track coach and works at Hillenbrand.
Student-athletes, family and friends were at the high school to cheer him on this morning.
Essick has an incentive to finish the race as fast as possible. His team is scheduled to arrive in Atlantic City late Saturday night and he has somewhere to be immediately afterwards.
"I've got a 6 a.m. flight from the Philadelphia airport which is about an hour-and-a-half away from Atlantic City to go on an Alaskan cruise," Essick told The 812.
Essick wasn’t supposed to be on the cross-country race, but his friend and training partner, Rob Strobel, suffering an injury a few weeks ago. Rob was in attendance at Batesville High School this morning Eden Thomas and Team Lithko rolled through.
One of his cross country athletes, Charlotte Trossman, was there to cheer him on this morning.
"It inspires me just to see that determination, but would I ever do it? No, because that just looks difficult, but it's props to him because it's very impressive," she said.
Essick and Team Lithko is racing for the charity, Concrete Cares, which is an organization that supports families and children battling cancer.
