Watch: Milan Band recognizes veterans during ceremony
(MILAN, Ind.) – Milan students and faculty honored those who served during a special Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday morning.
Local veterans were invited into the school for a breakfast which was followed by the ceremony.
The ceremony began when National Junior Honor Society members escorted the veterans into the high school gym.
That was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem performed by the Milan High School and a special song by fourth graders.
The ceremony was led by Student Council Juniors along with Assistant Principal Kim Taylor and Superintendent Pat Murphy.
The guest speaker was Coast Guard Lt. Commander Ryan Hixson, who graduated from Milan in 2000.
The former standout Milan athlete spoke about his career and travels in the Coast Guard.
He has served as an avionics electrical technician, a pilot and is now an Infrastructure Program Manager.
Hixson reflected on the definition of a veteran. He said one common theme among all veterans is courage.
The ceremony was followed by a performance by the Milan High School Choir before each veteran in attendance was recognized.
