Inside the police response to the Career Center Thursday

Ripley Co. Sheriff's Office sharing details

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – There have been tons of questions and concerns about what exactly happened at the Southeastern Career Center on Thursday afternoon.

Police initially received a report that there was a student with a gun, however, it was determined that there was no firearm.

Situations like this can lead to rumors and falsehoods as the story spreads through the community.

The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office wants parents and others to know exactly what happened. Here is a step-by-step account from Ripley County Chief Deputy Lee Davidson:

  • Police received an initial call that there was a student with a gun at the Southeastern Career Center at 1:28 p.m. Thursday.

  • There was a large and rapid response from law enforcement to the Career Center and the school was immediately placed into a full lockdown.

  • Police determined that there was no active threat and there was no validity to the initial call that there was a gun on the premises.

  • The school was then put into a soft lockdown after it was determined that there was no threat to students or faculty.

  • The students were then released from the school at 2:20 p.m. and returned to their home schools.

  • At that point, the investigation was then taken over by detectives with the Indiana State Police.

Chief Deputy Davidson said, “I am very proud of the rapid and proficient response from numerous law enforcement agencies from across the area within moments. The number one goal was to ensure the safety of the students and staff.”

Area law enforcement agencies train for active scenarios at local schools on a regular basis.
