Is there a black bear in Franklin Co? Here’s what we know:

No confirmation of bear in Southeast Indiana

(WEST HARRISON, Ind.) – We’re aware of a post circulating on Facebook regarding someone allegedly coming across evidence of a black bear near West Harrison in Franklin County.

The 812 has spoken with both the DNR and other law enforcement officials who have not received any reports indicating that.

At the time of this report, there hasn’t been any photographic evidence or trail camera footage depicting a bear in the area.

We also reached out to the individual who made the post on Monday afternoon, but have not heard back yet.

Is it possible for a bear to be in Indiana?

It is rare but the answer is yes. There have been a few confirmed reports over the past few years of black bears, but they have generally been south of us in areas such as New Albany or Vanderburgh County. Or up north closer to Michigan.

What do you do if you see a bear or another non-native species in our area?

You should contact the Department of Natural Resources or your local law enforcement agency. Also, do not approach the bear or other non-native animal.

If there was a bear in our area how would it be confirmed? Through the DNR as well as their team of biologists.

If a confirmed bear sighting occurs in Southeast Indiana, The 812 will certainly let you know!
