Also accused of meth possession
(LAUREL, Ind.) – A Laurel man is facing theft and drug charges after an investigation conducted by two sheriff’s departments.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the theft of a mini-excavator that occurred earlier this month.
Investigators say the suspect was identified as 48-year-old Charles Hunter of Laurel.
A Wayne County and Franklin County deputy went to a home on Commerce Street in Laurel in an effort to locate Hunter.
The deputies said they found the stolen excavator sitting on a trailer.
“It was alleged Hunter saw the officers and began throwing items, which he retrieved out of his pockets. Deputies quickly converged on Hunter and attempted to place him under arrest,” said Franklin County Chief Deputy Gregory Mehlbauer.
Hunter was arrested and deputies said he was also in possession of meth.
“The stolen mini-excavator was seized and Hunter was arrested for a felony and misdemeanor related to possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest. Additional charges are expected stemming from the Wayne County investigation,” Mehlbauer added.
