Local rider to come through Batesville Thursday morning

With cross-country bike race

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – The annual Race Across America is beginning to come through Southeast Indiana and this year there is one local rider with local ties.


The race features cyclists from across the world and the route started in Oceanside, California and will end in Atlantic City, New Jersey. 


Thomas Essick is a Batesville assistant cross country coach, middle school track coach and works at Hillenbrand. 


Essick wasn’t supposed to be on the cross-country race, but his friend and training partner, Rob Strobel, suffering an injury a few weeks ago. Thomas stepped up to fill his place on Team Lithko. 


Thomas will ride into Batesville at approximately 7-10 a.m. Thursday. Community members are encouraged to park at Batesville High School and walk down to State Road 46 to cheer him on. 

The route will go from the high school, to Oldenburg, down St. Mary’s Road and eventually into Ohio. 


Team Lithko is racing for the charity, Concrete Cares, which is an organization that supports families and children battling cancer.
