Indicted by grand jury in Hamilton County
(CINCINNATI) – The trial of a Dearborn County man accused of shooting and killing his wife will now take place in Ohio.
46-year-old Mohammed Mondal was originally charged with Murder and Neglect of a Dependent after his wife, Stacy, passed away from gunshot wounds on November 6, 2023.
Prosecutors say Mondal fatally shot his wife several times while traveling from Dearborn County to a photoshoot in Colerain, Ohio.
The alleged shooting took place in front of two of their children in the area of Sand Run Road in Ohio. He took his wife to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lawrenceburg where she was pronounced dead.
The Dearborn County trial was expected to begin in November, however, defense attorneys called an expert who said evidence shows that the shooting, and possible death of Stacy Mondal, actually occurred in Ohio.
Indiana law requires prosecutors to prove that either the shooting or death occurred in Indiana, Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens said.
"If the time of death is reduced to seconds or just a few minutes, after Stacy Mondal was shot, there is very substantial evidence to show that Mrs. Mondal died in Hamilton County, Ohio," Deddens stated.
On Wednesday, a Hamilton County grand jury indicted Mondal on Murder and Assault charges in connection to the shooting.
Deddens said her office, and the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department devoted hundreds of hours to prepare for the case.
“I'm disappointed that we could not take the case through to conclusion, but the important thing is that justice is secured for Stacy Mondal, her children, and her family," Deddens said.
She and her team met with the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office which led to the new indictment of aggravated murder, murder and three counts of felonious assault.
Deddens extended her gratitude to Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers and her staff for getting the case in front of a grand jury.
He is expected to be extradited to Hamilton County today.
