North Decatur team honors cancer victims, survivors

Updated: Jan 13

Ceremony held before the game

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- The North Decatur girl's basketball team traded in their traditional blue-and-red for pink uniforms on Thursday night.

It was the 14th annual Coaches vs. Cancer game which was started by head coach Doug Laker, who lost his mother to cancer.

Before the game, a ceremony was held where the lights were turned out and an empty table was placed at midcourt.

The table represented cancer victims who are no longer with us.

Fans turned on their phone lights to signify how cancer has impacted them, whether through a loved one or their own battle.

The players took flowers and handed them to cancer survivors before walking the survivors onto the court.

Laker hopes the ceremony not only honors those personally impacted, but serves as a reminder for people to not ignore signs of cancer.
