Among top scorers on Thomas More women's basketball team
(CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY.) – Longtime East Central photographer Sandy Mahoney makes a point to stay connected with graduates who are playing at the college level.
She recently traveled to Thomas More University to catch up with 2023 EC graduate Laney Baker.
Baker had success on the basketball court as well as the classroom. She earned All-EIAC honors twice and received an All-State Honorable Mention.
Academically, she was a member of the National Honor Society and held a 3.7 GPA in high school.
Laney says the athletic program at East Central prepared her well for college sports.
“We played a lot of really good teams, especially my junior and senior year in high school which really prepared me for the pressure of college,” Baker said.
She is now an integral part of the Thomas More women’s basketball program which won the NAIA National Championship in 2022.
After three games, she is among the top scorers for the Saints and leads the team in steals.
Baker says a major difference between high school and college basketball is the time commitment and the skill level.
She chose Thomas More because of the successful basketball program, plus the university is close to home.
Laney is in her sophomore year in college and there are several opportunities to see her play this winter in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
