PODCAST: Opening Doors for Women Overcoming Addiction

The 812's Kenzie Ogden interviews Brittany Stewart here:

(GREENSBURG, Indiana) Since 2018, Speranza House has provided a home and support for 117 women in Decatur County struggling with substance use disorder.

The nonprofit’s nine to twelve month program aims to provide a safe, supportive living space for residents to work through their emotions and prioritize their mental and physical health.

Later on in the program, the women are guided as they navigate applying for jobs and reentering the workforce. The employment rate after treatment at Speranza House is 95%.

Brittany Stewart gives credit to God and the Speranza House for completely turning her life around. Stewart has overcome her struggles with addiction and now serves as co-executive director at Speranza House as she encourages other women on their journey toward sobriety.

“When I was addicted, I was running from those emotions… I didn’t want to feel anything,” Stewart said. “This is a safe place to feel those things and we’re here to support you and to love you until you can love yourself again.”

The need for support and treatment for substance use disorder remains prominent in Greensburg. With a waiting list of over 50 names, Speranza is working toward opening doors at a second location.

In July 2024, Speranza Broadway will provide an additional space for women in search of support to overcome addiction.

The new house is made possible by local partnership with the Decatur County Community Foundation and Decatur County Community Fund.

The success of the nonprofit organization’s program is evident. The national relapse rate is 40-60%, while Speranza House is 26%.

While the home continues to stabilize lives and reunite families, its mission is clear: to provide hope.

The Speranza House welcomes volunteers and donations. Additional information can be found at https://www.speranzahouse.org or by calling (812) 222-0079.
