Police: Grandma drinking, children not properly restrained in fatal crash

Young boy killed, two other children were seriously hurt

(NORTH VERNON, Ind.) -- The Jennings County Sheriff's Office has arrested a woman after a fatal crash on October 28.


Police say 45-year-old Lisa Ely, of Seymour, was driving a vehicle with three young children when she crashed.


The crash claimed the life of 3-year-old Thomas Ely. His two siblings, a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old were flown to an Indianapolis hospital but have since been released.


Investigators say the children were wearing seatbelts, but there was no evidence of proper child restraints or car seats in use at the time of the crash.


Police say Ely was also speeding and toxicology results showed she had blood alcohol level above the legal limit.

Lisa Ely was arrested without incident Monday and charged with:


  • Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, Level 1 Felony

  • Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (2 counts), Level 3 Felony

  • Causing Death when Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated, Level 4 Felony

  • Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated (2 counts), Level 5 Felony
