St. Mary’s School celebrates Gabby Miller Thursday

School recognized the sixth grader during game

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – It was a packed house during the St. Mary’s Catholic School girl’s basketball game on Thursday night.

The Knights seventh and eighth grade teams were hosting St. Michael’s Catholic School of Brookville.

12-year-old Gabby Miller is part of the basketball program but has had to miss the past few months.

In December, she was diagnosed with AFM, an extremely rare condition that limits her ability to walk.

Gabby was at the game on Thursday after being discharged from the hospital where she had been for 55 days.

Kids and adults wore their “Fight Like Gabby” shirts and celebrated the sixth grader being back in the community.

“There’s a lot of love here and the Holy Spirit leads us and this is what we’re all about, being more than a school and more like a family,” said St. Mary’s Principal Nancy Buening.

While this has been a difficult situation for the Miller family, having the support of the school and community has been one positive aspect.

“This has opened my eyes to all the goodness in the world. Sometimes we get caught up in all the negativity,” Gabby’s mother, Suzanne said. “This has made me realize how much goodness there is still in the world.”

Principal Buening shared a similar message from what she has seen from the school community.

“Even the kids that are not sure why somebody is going through something like this, they have consistently asked what they could to help,” she said. “There’s a lot of negativity in the world and it’s nice to concentrate on making something positive out of such a difficult situation."

Gabby is expected to be back in the school soon and St. Mary’s has worked with her to ensure a smooth transition back into the classroom.
