St. Mary’s Turkey Supper continues Sunday

50+ year tradition

(ST. MARY’S, Ind.) – A Franklin County community continues a longtime annual tradition, despite their church closing more than a decade ago.

St. Mary’s of the Rock merged with Holy Family Church back in 2013.

The closure was part of a move by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis that led to 12 area parishes closing, while numerous others were merged or consolidated.

The Turkey Supper has been a tradition going back more than a half-century. Prior to the fall festival, the church used to hold a fried chicken dinner each July.

Despite the church no longer being open for normal masses, community members continue to volunteer and organize the festival every year.

It features a made-from scratch turkey dinner, with mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pies and more. There is also a raffles and a country store.

It takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the church is located at 17044 St. Mary’s Road.

The proceeds from the festival go toward upkeep and expenses of the church.
