Student-athletes create morning Bible study at South Decatur

Program started this school year

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- Several students arrive an hour early to school each week at South Decatur for a program they started.

A weekly Bible study was created by students who are involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

"We were doing things monthly but we wanted to do something weekly," said South Decatur basketball player Jacob Scruggs.

The program welcomes all students and it starts at 7:15 a.m. every Tuesday in the school library.

"Anybody can come in and learn about who God is, we ask questions, there's commentary and we welcome a bunch of different views," Scruggs said.

Clair Schoettmer is a senior and says the weekly Bible study attracts about 30 students each week.

"It's definitely been something new because I've never been one to like, just pick up my Bible and read it. So it's really helped. I think it's helped a lot of people come out of their shell and further their faith," Schoettmer said.

Scruggs, who hopes to play college basketball, says his favorite part of the student-led initiative is seeing new people stop by.

"It really brings a smile to my face when I see new people here, it is heartwarming," he said.
