South Ripley student combines ice cream and puppies for good cause
(VERSAILLES, Ind.) -- A South Ripley sixth grader not only loves ice cream and puppies but enjoys being able to use her passions to help others even more.
11-year-old Abby Weatherwax created her own company called Puppy Poop Ice Cream last year.
She has an ice cream truck and serves ice cream to humans while also having treats for pets.
"We have frozen peanut butter blueberry treats that were recently added to our menu for our four legged friends," Abby's parents said.
Her company is a non-profit and a portion of the proceeds go toward organizations like the Ripley County Humane Society.
"I made it the Puppy Poop mission to help dogs and other pets get their forever homes, loving families, and proper vet care, too," Abby said.
Abby and her family operate the truck at local events and also in Indianapolis.
This summer, she had the truck at the Freeman Revival in Osgood and will soon be a vendor at Bricktoberfest on September 16 and Barktoberfest at the Decatur County Fairgrounds on October 21.
Abby recently brought her business to fellow classmates as part of a program led by teachers Lisa Gilpin and Kristin Stone.
South Ripley sixth graders have spent the past few weeks learning about pet adoptions, volunteering at animal shelters and animal rights.
As part of the program, Abby brought her ice cream truck to South Ripley Elementary on Tuesday.
It's a family business for Abby as her brother, Carter, is the Puppy Poop mascot and her parents are also involved in the operations.
Her family is also what inspired her to become an entrepreneur at just 10-years-old.
"I grew up in Greensburg, and my Nana owned the Mancino's down there when I was younger, so that's when I learned my love for serving others," Abby said.
Great job, Abby and we look forward to getting some ice cream at Bricktoberfest in Osgood on September 16!
