Camp provided by Genesis: Pathways to Success
(VERSAILLES, Ind.) -- Students had the opportunity to attend a unique camp to explore construction careers at the Southeastern Career Center last week.
The camp included 34 students who worked with instructors to get hands-on experience in the basics of electrical trades and building trades.
Rising Sun eighth grader Kynnadi Hartley was one of three girls in the camp.
“I liked either the carpentry or the big machines. They have a lot of hands-on learning. We were able to experience the work which is important for getting a job in the future,” Hartley said.
Students also built birdhouses, operated heavy machinery, and wired electrical sockets and light fixtures.
The camp served as an introduction to the basics to let students explore if construction is a future career interest.
Instructor Todd Ault said, “I think it’s three-fold, first of all, it gets these kids out of the house! But, importantly, it gives them the chance to learn through a hands-on project, and it provides confidence and skills they may not be exposed to otherwise."
The program was made possible by Genesis: Pathways to Success which is an initiative of the Ripley County Community Foundation.
