Students of the Week: Tree City Homeschoolers

Students collect items for the needy in Decatur County

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- A group of students associated with Tree City Homeschoolers in Decatur County are giving back to the community.

The students recently collected various nonperishable food items and personal care products for Greensburg Bread of Life.

"We had reached out ahead of time to ask what their current needs were and made sure to provide the items they needed most," said parent and teacher Jessica Smith.

There were a total of 237 pounds of non-perishables collected at the event by the homeschooling families.

The students are also getting involved with helping other community organizations like the Decatur County Agape Center and Garments of Grace.

Some of the high school students have also pledged monetary donations to help another nonprofit organization that serves Decatur county. The rest of the Tree City students will be taking up an additional collections of food and cash donations this semester for other local non-profits.

"Watching our students give back to the community shows us that we’re instilling a community minded value in our students. It lets us know that they care about the families in need across Decatur County and truly want to do what they can to help," Smith said.

"It lets them know that no matter their age, they can take part in helping our community."

Tree City Homeschoolers is ministry that seeks to provide a community of support and encouragement for homeschool families. They provide fellowship through field trips, weekly classes, moms nights, teen nights, playdates and more.

Each of our homeschooling families has an opportunity to join a variety of fun and educational classes throughout the school year through our GRACE Co-op. These classes are organized, scheduled, and taught by volunteer parents from our group. The organization serves over 50 families in and around Decatur County and close to 100 kids ranging from pre-school to high school.

Anyone interested in joining Tree City Homeschoolers should check out our website treecityhomeschoolers.com. Membership is open year-round.

"If you are new to homeschooling, we welcome you to check out our New to Homeschooling section on our website," Smith added.

"Joining a community of fellow homeschooling parents has helped me build confidence in homeschooling my own children. None of us have to homeschool alone and having a support system who can help come along side you makes a big difference. Tree City Homeschoolers has given our family so many more opportunities for learning than I could have done on my own," she said.
