STW PREVIEW: Greensburg Pirates

A new coach will lead the team in 2023

Photo: Conner Beagle

Quick Notes:

Class 3A Sectional 31

Head coach: Wes Anderson

Record at Greensburg: 0-0; first year with program.

2022 Record: 4-7; lost to Lawrenceburg in the Sectional Tournament.

The past few years for Greensburg hasn't gone the way the Pirates would have expected. They've posted below .500 records in 2021 and 2022, and the Pirates were in desperate need of a culture change.

Enter Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is the brand new head coach for the Pirates and is looking to take this team to the next level. Anderson was previously at New Palestine where he was the assistant coach on a 2022 squad that posted a 12-1 record and with the Pirates only having 3 winning seasons since 2013, he’s hoping that he can bring that winning culture with him to Greensburg.

We asked Coach Anderson about what his immediate goals for 2023 are and his response was:

“I'm really excited to see this group take the field. We have a tremendous amount of talent on our roster. We need to learn how to practice and play the game the right way in terms of effort and technique. We have a long way to go in those areas, but our kids are meeting that challenge each and every day," Anderson said.

"We elected to install a whole new offense and defense this spring, so we need to keep improving and keep learning. I think this group has a tremendous amount of potential. We're eager to see how it all comes together in August," he added.

Anderson will have his work cut out for him. Taking a look at the roster, he will have quite a few young guys starting on Varsity this fall as well as some varsity newcomers.

Last season, the Pirates primarily ran their entire offensive and defensive scheme through one player by the name of Sam West. West is currently a tight end at Indiana University but wore a lot of hats with the Pirates including QB, Safety, Punter and he even ran back kick returns.

This year, Greensburg will have a new signal caller by the name of Bryson Abplanalp. The sophomore played very limited snaps as a freshman last year and is looking to make the most of Coach Anderson’s new offensive install.

Be sure to get out and support your Pirates in 2023!
