Throwback uniforms and old-time cheers in December
(VEVAY, Ind.) -- Switzerland County's cheerleading program has came up with a unique idea to celebrate the past.
They will pay homage to the cheerleaders of Patriot High School which merged with the current high school in 1969.
The final four Patriot cheerleaders recently met with the team to give them some lessons.
"We showed them cheers from 55 years ago. The girls were excited and as sweet as can be. It was a blast and a great way for us relive the past," said Channie Smith, who graduated from Patriot in 1968.
The former cheerleaders say things have changed quite a bit over the years. One thing they have noticed is that cheer includes gymnastics much more than it used to.
"We didn't have any cheerleader competitions and we were just country bumpkins. We were just lucky we were able to stay after school and not have to do chores at home," Patriot graduate Mona Cook laughed.
Switzerland County Cheer will pay tribute to Patriot by wearing throwback uniforms and performing old-time cheers during the boys basketball game on December 1, and then again during the girls game on December 4.
"We're not sure we're going to get out on the floor and cheer with them, but we will be there for sure," said Smith.
