(VEVAY, Ind.) – The Indiana Department of Education released their list of Purple Star Schools on Monday morning.
The designation is given to schools that show a significant display of commitment to service members, veterans and students and families connected to our nation’s military.
The award is given on a school basis, not by district. The status remains in effect for the awarded schools for a period of three years.
Switzerland County Middle School earned the designation this year, which means every school in the district has the designation.
They join Franklin County Schools as the only other school corporation in Southeast Indiana where each school is designated as a Purple Star School.
North Decatur High School and South Decatur Elementary received the 2024 designation as well.
The recognition comes as all three schools are hosting Veterans Day ceremonies on Monday.
Schools receiving the Purple Star designation must meet the following criteria:
Have an assigned point of contact for military families,
Meet all grade-level training requirements for point of contact,
Have a dedicated webpage providing recognition and resources for service members, veterans and students and families,
Host an annual military program (e.g., Veterans Day, 9/11, etc.),
Have a public military display recognizing service members,
