Presented Medal of Valor on Monday night
(AURORA, Ind.) – Two Aurora firefighters are being honored for their heroic actions during a fire earlier this year.
The fire department was dispatched to an apartment fire on Second Street on October 14.
Aurora firefighters Zackery Gibbs and Jason Skipworth entered the apartment and found the fire coming from the bathroom.
The firefighters also discovered a person that was lying on the living room floor.
Gibbs and Skipworth picked up the man and carried him downstairs and into safety.
The two firefighters then returned to the apartment and extinguished the fire.
On Monday night, Gibbs and Skipworth were presented with the Medal of Valor.
They are the fourth and fifth firefighters in department history to receive this honor.
“These Heroes are volunteers that have full time jobs. These heroes put a lot of time into training. These heroes go out on every call not knowing if they will safely return home,” Aurora Fire Chief Jeff Lane said.
The award was given on behalf of Aurora Mayor Patrick Schwing and Aurora City Council. It was presented by Indiana State Fire Marshal Stephen Jones.
The photo was provided by Versailles Fire Chief Ben Sieverding who was in attendance.
