One of 55 nominees nationwide
(ST. LEON, Ind.) – An East Central senior is one of 55 nominees for the 2024 Doodle for Google contest.
Carson Mapes created a design called “Together We Heal” and if enough people vote for him, his design will be featured on Google’s homepage.
We asked him what inspired him to make a design themed around healing.
“Social media is the reason I did it. Because, hate and discourse is constantly thrown at our generation and it is always in our face,” Mapes said.
His goal is that the design will bring positivity and he believes people coming together can make an impact on the world.
As part of the contest, the students were tasked with selecting a teacher who inspired them.
Maps selected East Central math teacher Pam Donohue. He says the impact she has made goes far beyond the classroom.
“She is genuinely the best teacher I have ever had. She’s taught me things that don’t correlate to math, but how to persevere and push through things you might not want to do,” Maps said.
“She pushed me to break through the teen immaturity and instead of looking at math like ‘I’ll never need this in my life,’ but rather consider problem-solving and doing things you don’t want to do."
You can vote for Mapes to win the Google Doodle by clicking here. Be sure to click on the 10-12th grade category.
The contest includes 55 entries from across the United States and the deadline to vote is June 4.
If Carson wins, he could receive a $55,000 college scholarship.
